Introduction to the IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka

What Happened..?



This was the introductory session for the IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka 2018.

Organized by the IEEE Chapter of Sri Lanka, the IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka 2018 is a competition that aims at providing training, mentoring and financial support to budding entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka. In addition, it also exposes the global market to participants to take their ideas worldwide.

The session consisted of a number of speakers who would share their experiences about being an entrepreneur. It also would have a brief overview of how IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka 2018 would take place.

Sameera Nilupul

Director at LiveRoom



Nilupul's Personal Profile

He is an entrepreneur and a computer graphics enthusiast on his mission to strengthen the computer graphics and game development industry in Sri Lanka. He is currently the Director of LiveRoom (2015 to present), an award winning, and currently expanding software engineering and product development company, which was recognized as the best startup company of the year 2017 by CSSL.

LiveRoom has recently expanded into Japan, USA, Australia and Saudi Arabia, providing high end research and development services and software product engineering services. His team who designed a wheelchair that work according to the gestures of head moments and voice commands won the Best Engineering Project Award at ICAMES 2014 (International Cultural and Academic Meeting of Engineering Students) and became the Runners-up of Young Innovative Challenge organized by IESL in 2013.

Chris Doering

Project Coordinator StartUp Ecosystem Sri Lanka at SLASSCOM


Doering's Personal Profile

Chris Doering is the Project Coordinator of StartUp Ecosystem Sri Lanka at SLASSCOM as well as a highly experienced interdisciplinary designer, inventor and innovation consultant from Berlin, Germany.

He has been exploring a wider field of disruptive innovations like the sustainable energy transition in Germany, rural and urban development, the future of work and the effects and implications of the digital transformation.

He has built up and leads a widely acknowledged hands-on innovation hub and start-up ecosystem in Berlin, advised several private and public institutions on Creative Collaboration and served as a design researcher at Europe’s major institution for applied research and innovation, where he managed a design team as creative director.

He is currently working with SLASSCOM to nurture the Sri Lankan Innovation Ecosystem by Designing Spaces, Formats and Methods for co-creation and Intercultural Collaboration.

Dhanika Perera

Dhanika's Personal Profile

Dhanika Perera is an Award-winning Serial Entrepreneur and an Engineer with a great passion for innovation and aggressive execution. He founded his first company Bhasha Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. in 2011 as a Sri Lankan technology company focused on developing localized Digital Technology solutions for Sri Lankan Masses and second company PayHere (Pvt.) Ltd. in 2016 as an eCommerce Payments Company to break the online payment accepting barriers in Sri Lanka.

He invented the Sinhala Unicode rendering technology on Android Mobile platform as his university individual project. Later he commercialized it, innovating "SETT Browser" as the first ever Sinhala/Tamil supported mobile web browser and "Helakuru" as the first ever Sinhala mobile keyboard for Android and iOS, enabling local masses to get the benefit out of ICT solutions in their own languages.

He was awarded the mBillionth South Asian Award in 2011 for innovating SETT Browser and later his company was awarded seven e-Swabhimani National Awards, six NBQSA National Awards and another mBillionth South Asian Award among others throughout the past years. He was also honoured as “The Most Innovative ICT Entrepreneur” of the Year 2015 by SLASSCOM at National Best Quality ICT Awards (NBQSA) 2015.

Rohan Jayaweera

Co-Founder & Chief Operations Officer at Antyra Solutions(Pvt) Ltd


Rohan's Personal Profile

Rohan Jayaweera is the director, co-founder as well as the Chief Operations Officer at Antyra Solutions (Pvt.) Ltd. (2014 to present), a boutique and exclusive omni­channel digital experience management company.

He was the Country consultant for Google Asia Pacific and currently for Palo Alto Networks. He was the first recruit by Google for Sri Lanka and Maldives for initiatives from Google, to the markets as well as those that are coming out from the markets. As the Country Consultant at Google for Sri Lanka and Maldives (2012-2014), he managed all engagements to and from Google for Sri Lanka during his tenure which included digital practice, policy framework, publisher, video and telco partnerships, community and entrepreneurship development.

Furthermore, he was a lead management consultant for IT sector based in Singapore and held the leadership positions in Cisco, Lenovo and IBM, across geographies. In addition to that, he was the Country Coordinator ­ for Google outreach initiatives, GBG, GDG, GSA, GBG Women and more. He is a keynote speaker, presenter and moderator for countless events and was invited to speak at the inaugural TEDx in SL on entrepreneurship as well.
